A Farewell to Mason Cox: From Oklahoma to AFL Glory – The American Pie’s Remarkable Journey 🖤🤍

One of the most extraordinary stories in the history of Australian Rules Football came full circle this week, as Collingwood Football Club bid farewell to Mason Cox — the towering American who defied every odd to become not only a Magpies favourite but also a true AFL icon.

Cox’s journey began far from the footy fields of Melbourne. Born in Highland Village, Texas, and educated at Oklahoma State University, Cox was a talented college basketball player who, in 2014, attended an AFL international combine in Los Angeles. What began as curiosity quickly turned into destiny. His athleticism, agility, and height (211cm) caught the attention of AFL scouts, and in 2015, Collingwood took a bold chance on the untested American, signing him as an international rookie.

What followed was a story that transcended sport — a tale of persistence, resilience, and cultural crossover. Mason Cox arrived in Australia not knowing the rules, the tactics, or even how to properly kick an oval-shaped ball. Yet within just a few years, he became a mainstay in one of the AFL’s most storied clubs.

From his debut in 2016, Cox quickly captured the imagination of fans. His first game, Anzac Day against Essendon, remains one of the most memorable debuts in recent history — he kicked a goal with his first kick, sending the Collingwood faithful into raptures. The tall Texan became a cult hero overnight, not just because of his size and skill but because of his charisma and sheer determination to belong.

The 2018 season was arguably Cox’s breakout year. In the preliminary final against Richmond, he produced one of the most dominant performances ever seen by a key forward on the big stage. His three-goal first half stunned the reigning premiers and sent Collingwood into the Grand Final. “The Yank” had become a household name across Australia. Even rival fans couldn’t help but admire his fearless approach and infectious enthusiasm.

Through challenges, including injuries and questions about his form, Cox remained a consummate professional. His unwavering work ethic and love for the game inspired teammates and supporters alike. Despite moments when many thought his AFL career might end, he continued to fight his way back, reinventing himself as a reliable ruck-forward hybrid and a trusted figure in Collingwood’s setup.

And then came 2023 — the crowning moment of his career. Under coach Craig McRae, Collingwood surged back to the summit of Australian football, claiming the AFL Premiership in a thrilling victory over Brisbane. For Mason Cox, it was more than just a medal — it was history. He became the first American to ever win an AFL Premiership, cementing his place in the sport’s folklore.

In total, Cox played 139 games across 11 seasons, kicking over 120 goals and winning countless admirers for his courage and passion. Beyond the statistics, his legacy lies in what he represented — the belief that anything is possible when you combine hard work with heart.

Cox’s impact extended off the field too. He embraced Australian culture while proudly representing his American roots. From wearing safety goggles after a serious eye injury to appearing on television shows and promoting AFL internationally, he became an ambassador for the sport’s global potential. His story has already inspired a new generation of international athletes to consider a future in the AFL.

As Collingwood announced his departure, the club paid tribute to the man who helped bridge two sporting worlds. “Coxy has been a remarkable figure in our club’s history,” said a spokesperson. “What he’s achieved — coming from the U.S. and adapting to our game — is something truly special. We thank him for everything he’s given to the black and white.”

Mason Cox leaves the game with pride, having achieved what many thought impossible. From Oklahoma’s hardwood courts to the MCG’s roaring stands, his journey stands as a reminder that sport can break barriers and unite cultures.

As the curtain falls on his AFL career, fans will forever remember the towering Texan in the black and white stripes — the man who dared to dream and made history.

Thanks for everything, Coxy. The Magpie Army will never forget you. 🖤🤍
